In 1866, German immigrant August Scholtz built this structure as a meeting place for those interested in song and social activities. In 1966, a resolution was passed by the Texas House of Representatives, which identified it as "a gathering place for Texans of discernment, taste, culture, and erudition, epitomizing the finest traditions of magnificent German heritage in our State." William Sydney Porter sang here with the Hill City Quartette.
