Class Descriptions

Basic Computer Skills
First Tuesday of each month, 1:00 - 2:30 p.m., and,
Second Monday of each month from 10:00 - 11:30 p.m.

Class defines basic computer terms and provides practice with basic Windows operations. Students receive an introduction to what is available on Library public computers, including the Internet, e-mail, and Microsoft Office.
No class prerequisites.

Introduction to Microsoft Excel
First Wednesday of each month, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., and,
Fourth Tuesday of each month, 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

Class introduces the basics of spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel software. Students will learn to enter, edit, copy, delete, and move data; format numbers and text; change, insert, delete, and sort columns and rows.
Class prerequisites: Microsoft Office experience.

Introduction to the Internet
Third Wednesday of each month, 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

Class covers the basics of browsers and Web sites, plus an introduction to searching online. For people who have little or no experience using the Internet.
Class prerequisites: Completion of Basic Computer Skills or mastery of mouse handling

Web E-mail
First Monday of each month, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

Class covers the basics of setting up a Web e-mail account, plus how to compose, and receive messages, manage an inbox, and attach/open documents.
Class prerequisites: Internet experience, mastery of mouse handling

Intermediate Web E-mail
Third Monday of each month, 4:00 - 5:30 p.m.

Students will explore additional features of a web-based email account. Topics include how to customize Yahoo! email with folders, an address book and a signature on outgoing messages. Further practice sending and receiving email attachments and using the spell check feature.
Class prerequisites: Students should already have an e-mail account. Internet experience, mastery of mouse handling

Introduction to Reference Databases
Third Tuesday of each month, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Learn how to search APL's reference databases to find full-text articles from newspapers, magazines, journals, and reference books. Librarians will teach the basics of searching popular databases as well as teaching a specific database at student request. At signup, please note database student is interested in learning.
Class prerequisite: Intermediate computer skills

MS Word
Second Thursday of each month, 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Class introduces tasks of word processing using Microsoft Office Word software. Students will learn to create, format, save and print a document. Students will also learn the difference between save and save as. Also covers tasks such as centering, shading, bullets, inserting an image, creating envelopes and labels. For people who have little or no experience using Microsoft Office Word.
Requirements: Completion of Basic Computer Skills or mastery of mouse handling and keyboarding.

Computer Lab
Weekly, Thursdays, 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Bring your questions about basic computer skills, including how to use the Internet, e-mail, and Microsoft Word or other questions related to the use of programs or computers, including resume writing. No sign up is required. The computer lab will be offered every Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Computer Room 201. This session should not be confused with a troubleshooting meeting. We will not be able to diagnose or troubleshoot specific problems with your computer hardware and software.

Correo Electrónico
Cuarto miércoles de cada dos meses de 4:00 a 5:30 p.m.

Los estudiantes aprenden como abrir una cuenta del correo electrónico y obtener una dirección, mandar y recibir mensajes, adjuntar archivos, y manejar varias carpetas incluidas en sus cuentas.
